Professional Background:
Dr. Marisa Perera, PhD, is a reproductive psychologist and the founder of Natal Counseling in Miami, Florida. With specialized training in the relationship between women's physiology and mental health, she supports women through major hormonal and reproductive transitions, including perimenopause and menopause. Her work is grounded in an understanding of how physical changes, emotional well-being, relationships, and life experiences intersect.
Dr. Perera specializes in reproductive and perinatal mental health, including infertility, miscarriage, pregnancy, postpartum adjustment, and the emotional challenges of family building and parenthood. She provides a compassionate space for women navigating uncertainty, grief, difficult decisions, and the mental load that can accompany significant life transitions. Before founding Natal Counseling, she served as a Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, where she worked with individuals experiencing fertility-related stress, parenting challenges, anxiety, depression, and trauma.
Her approach combines evidence-based psychological methods with mind-body and nervous system regulation, cognitive and behavioral strategies, radical acceptance, attachment-focused work, and trauma-informed care. Rather than applying a one-size-fits-all model, she tailors therapy to each client's experiences, needs, and goals, helping them better understand their emotions and develop meaningful ways to navigate life's challenges.
Dr. Perera holds a PhD in Clinical Psychology from the University of Miami and bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Michigan. She completed a fellowship in Women's Health at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, where she helped establish fertility consultation services and perinatal group therapy. Her previous work also includes helping launch telehealth therapy services for pregnant individuals at the Miami VA and consulting with organizations developing mental wellness resources for expecting and new mothers.
Dr. Perera is comfortable supporting breast and gynecologic cancer survivors, as well as women experiencing treatment-induced menopause or navigating menopause after preventive surgery related to elevated genetic risk, including BRCA. Her support includes emotional care for mental health symptoms, behavioral strategies for managing physical health symptoms, and storytelling work to help women make meaning of their experiences and find greater peace. When appropriate, she works alongside clients' oncology care teams to support their emotional well-being throughout these transitions.
Years of Practice: 11 years of experience in clinical psychology, reproductive and women's mental health, trauma-informed therapy, and emotional support through major life transitions.
